Dinosaur Muffins

This morning Kaylee asked if we could make Dinosaur muffins. We discussed what might be in the recipe. Milk, flour, chocolate, sprinkles, a little bit of butter, sugar and dinosaur eggs.
We talked about where we would we get dinosaur eggs from. Not the lake, not the garden, not the museum and not the warehouse. We rung the supermarket and we were very lucky that the supermarket had dinosaur eggs in stock! Jo and several children got very busy making the dinosaur muffins. They were just delicious!

Baby Quails

About 6 weeks ago our quails had their second lot of babies. They had 6 but unfortunately only 3 have survived. They are very cute and are growing quickly. The children have enjoyed watching and learning about the life cycle of these birds as they have laid eggs, hatched, died and survived. The Children have gained a great deal of knowledge from this experience.

The Gingerbread Man

This is the infamous Gingerbread Man song that your children may have been singing/talking about at home. This is a very popular song/story at kindergarten and has been for the last few terms. Today we finally got a chance to video it for the blog, the children did a fabulous job. Enjoy!

Planning & Evaluation 17-28 August

The Salon

This is a video of the salon that the children set up in the family corner. I unfortunately had been taking still photos and switched to video mode without turning the camera but still felt it was just too gorgeous to not show you all. My apologies for being a dizz! You'd think I'd have sussed this out with 3 years on an ICT contract. LOL! Anyway enjoy our video and we are taking bookings for a fabulous style and massage (which you may need to get the crick out of your neck after viewing this!!!!!).

Wombat Stew Grasslands Style

On Tuesday we made Wombat Stew. This came about after one of the children discovered a photographic story about some Wombat stew that children from 2007 had made. We read the real story of Wombat Stew then made a list of things we wanted in our Wombat Stew. As you can imagine it had lots of sweet stuff in it!

On Tuesday morning Teacher Jo and Office Jo took Tyne and Ebony to the supermarket to buy the ingredients on our list. All the morning children helped to make our stew. They did a fantastic job because it was scrumdiddlelylious!

Making a Sally Lunn using mashed Potato!

We made Sally Lunn Buns with our left over potatoes from the Matariki Boil Up. If you view the slide show you will learn the recipe. Give it a go. It tastes great especially with sultanas added to it!

Pizza Hut Watch Out!

This morning we made individual pizzas using scone dough as a base. The children chose their own toppings then we baked them and tasted them. Only two children chose not to be involved and only one child tasted their pizza and chose not to eat the rest. All in all the children were successful in making themselves a delicious snack I think it's safe to say!

We had quite a production line going and I have a new appreciation of Pizza Palour employees working to time deadlines on their orders!

I don't think Grasslands will be starting up a Pizza franchaise in the near future though despite the tamariki being great little cooks.

Inside the Ambulance

St John's Ambulance Visit with Graham North

The children have had a growing interest in doctor's and nurse's and caring for one another's injuries. From the children's growing interest we decided to invited the St John's Ambulance along for a visit to show us all the tools and instruments they use to help people. Thank you to Graham North from St John's for taking the time to come along to kindergarten today.

Haka

We have been learning the haka and we have been watching this video to learn the words, the moves and get the mood. This is a favourite as is the gingerbread man haka!

Mother Hen's Visit

What an occasion!! Houdini visited kindergarten today and recieved lots of hugs and cuddles from the children and staff today. She is the aunty to the two chicks that also visited.... Thank you to Ra, Jahrome's mum for bringing them in to share with us. What an awesome experience for the tamariki as we don't all get to have chickens in our back yard!!!

Nana's chickens!

Jahrome arrived with his nana very excited about the baby pepe she had at home. We sent him home with the camera to take photos to bring back to share with us and this is the result. Great work Jahrome. They are so cute.

The Axolotl Eggs

The other morning we arrived at kindergarten to discover the Axolotl tank full of axolotl eggs.
Our two axolotls had been very busy! An axolotl can lay anywhere from 300 to 1100 eggs in one spawning! They are coated in a gelatinous coat which sticks to the surfaces inside the tank, and is absolutely revolting to touch! However the children were very intrigued. We had to clean the tank out because they were everywhere. Hatching and growing baby axolotls requires time and attention and is not suitable at this time of year because we are heading towards the christmas holiday break, it is something we will consider in the new year. In the mean time we have taken away their light in order to keep the water tempurature down to reduce the chance they will try again!

We had them muddled up too! Our female is the dark one and our male is the light/white one.

Our Fish

The children have been very active this week using the kindergarten camera's around our enviornment and at home. This is a photo Cameron took of our blackmore fish at kindy this morning. It was such a great shot i had to share it with you all.

Aragorn's Kitten Shreke

On Tuesday afternoon we were lucky enough to have Aragorn and his mum bring in Aragorn's cat Shreke. She was beautiful, the children had an opportunity to pat her while Aragorn's mum explained where she came from, how she likes to be held, and how much she loves children.
The Tamariki really enjoyed meeting her. Thank you so much to Aragorn's mum, Aragorn and Shreke for coming to visit us at kindergarten and sharing your family pet.
