Ngaikiha uses the hoops in a way that is different from the other ways hoops usually get used in the environment. She is thinking carefully about what she wants to make happen and sets about testing ways to do this. She persists until she succeeds then goes on to try another way of balancing the hoops using more hoops. She is extending her own learning by challenging herself beyond what she has just achieved. This is the way we all learn. We build to our knowledge and skills by using what we know to go that little step further.
Tino pai to mahi, Ngaikiha. Great work, Ngaikiha!

What an awesome blog on Nikes. She showed me one day what she was making with the hoops.
ReplyDeleteTwo weeks ago we had some Japanese billets staying with us and we went to a farewell for them. At this farewell a young boy did a Native American dance using hoops. It was really cool. I asked Nikes if she was making her hoops like from the dance she saw.
"Yes" she said.
It's awesome to see her using her experience from the farewell and bringing it to Kindy to experiment with.
Thanks Grasslands for providing a awesome place for our Nikes to grow and learn.

ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments. That helps explain Ngaikiha's interest in the hoops. I agree it is just fantastic that she has brought this experience back into the kindergarten. I guess I should have asked her what inspired her to use the hoops in that way! Good reflection of teaching practice! Thanks for filling in that gap for me. I really was so impressed with Ngaikiha's persistence on the task!
Wonderful that you have followed up this story and revisited it WITH Ngaikiha. You rock!
